Big Bird Blasts Obama TAKE ME OUT OF YOUR ATTACK AD!

This article is brought to you by the letter P … as in Sesame Street is PISSED that Barack Obama used Big Birdin an anti-Romney attack ad without permission! In case you haven’t seen it … Team Obama released the ad (video below) following the debate, in which they mock Mitt Romney‘s vow to cut off government funding to PBS. The ad portrays Big Bird as an enemy of America who towered over criminals like Bernie Madoff and Ken Lay.

But Big Bird isn’t laughing … and neither is Ernie, Bert, Oscar or Elmo (and that dude laughs at EVERYTHING) … claiming Team Obama never asked for permission before using the Sesame Street character.

In fact, Sesame Workshop released a statement saying, “We have approved no campaign ads, and as is our general practice, have requested that the ad be taken down.”

SW also explains, “Sesame Workshop is a nonpartisan, nonprofit organization and we do not endorse candidates or participate in political campaigns.”

Obama’s camp says they have heard Sesame Street’s complaints and will be reviewing SS’s concerns.

Romney Disses Little Kids Over Nickelodeon Prez Show

1008_obama_mitt_nick
President Obama‘s peeps say Mitt Romney is gonna be sorry for blowing off a bunch of kids who participated in the Nickelodeon show, “Kids Pick the President.”

The premise of the show — kids submit questions to each candidate and based on the answers they make their pick for leader of the free world.

Obama answered the kids’ questions, but Romney said he didn’t have the time.

Deputy National Press Secretary Adam Fetcher said “It’s no surprise Romney decided to play hookey. Kids demand details, and I’m sure they want some answers on why Romney could increase their class sizes, eliminate their teacher’s jobs, raise taxes on their families and slash funding for Big Bird.”

Fetcher ends with this zinger: “‘The dog ate my homework’ just doesn’t cut it when you’re running for President.”

Jim Lehrer I Felt Kinda Disrespected at the Debate

100412_jim_lehrer_launch_v2

Jim Lehrer made it clear to TMZ … he’s well aware he was treated like a doormat by President Obama and Mitt Romney during Wednesday’s Presidential debate.

Our camera guy asked Lehrer at Reagan National Airport, “Do you feel you were disrespected by President Obama and Governor Romney?”Lehrer responded, “I didn’t expect much. I didn’t have a lot of expectations.” Translation — doormat.

And, of course, we also asked him about the demise of Big Bird.

BTW, Lehrer issued a statement saying part of his mission was to stay out of the way of the flow. Mission accomplished.

Mitt Romney Gene Hackman Should Play MY WIFE in Movie

091812_romney_live

Gene Hackman would make a lovely Ann Romney in a Hollywood movie about her life … this according to Mitt Romney.

The Republican nominee and his wife appeared on “Live! with Kelly and Michael” this morning … and endured a Rapid Fire line of questions … one of which was, “Who would you pick to play each other in the movie?”

Mitt replied, “For me, my favorite actor is Gene Hackman … so I’d like Gene Hackman.”

Kelly Ripa quickly shot back, “You want Gene Hackman to play YOUR WIFE!?”

Mitt laughed …and joked, “What was that movie he was in? The Birdcage?”

Don’t worry, Mitt eventually corrected himself … and picked a more appropriate star.

Did Nicki Minaj Publicly Endorse Mitt Romney?

20120904-073440.jpg

By: Denver

That seems to be the question of the hour. Lil Wayne’s Dedication 4 mixtape dropped earlier today, with a remix to “Mercy” featuring Nicki Minaj. In the song, she raps:

I’m a Republican voting for Mitt Romney
You lazy bitches are fucking up the economy

While it’s easy to take this as a joke, one can’t help but wonder if she’s serious. Earlier this year she caught a bit of flack on twitter for criticizing Obama about failures of the health-care system.

If she is serious, does a rap verse count as an official endorsement? Take a listen to the song below.

Dems Release Voter Registration Apps, Including Open Source Version

By Ryan Singel

While voting for the president via a browser may never happen, it’s now easier to register to vote online, thanks to the Obama campaign and the Democratic party, which debuted two flavors of online voter registration widgets just days before their nomination convention.

Late Friday night, the Democratic National Committee released open source software that allows any site — whether it leans Republican, Democratic, Libertarian or Occupyist — to embed an unbranded app that helps citizens register to vote. The open source code uses the cool kids’ Ruby on Rails framework and was posted on GitHub, the go-to spot for coders to collaborate on open software. (Here’s a demo of the app running on Heroku.)

Would-be voters simply fill out a form, and the app creates a PDF unique to their state that they can print out. Citizens of states that allow online registration are taken directly to the proper online form. The code is released under a custom license from the DNC that allows wide re-use of the code, so long as laws aren’t broken.

Just a few hours later, the Obama re-election campaign debuted its own version, a point-and-click customizable voter registration form that anyone can embed on their website or in a blog post. Like the open source version, the widget creates a PDF that a citizen needs to mail in or directs them to their state’s official online form.

Unlike the GitHub code, this widget is powered by the Obama campaign and presumably shares a would-be voter’s contact information with the campaign. The campaign’s privacy policy says it uses information provided to its site to send newsletters, to serve ads and to help people find their polling place.

Adam Fetcher, an Obama campaign spokesman, says the tools are intended to simplify the process of registering for all citizens in order to make elections more representative.

“We need more Americans to have a say in their government,” Fetcher said via e-mail. “[T]hese new tools are part of our efforts to get as many Americans involved in the process as possible heading into our convention in Charlotte and in the remaining days until Nov. 6.”

According to estimates from George Madison University, in 2010 there approximately 217 million eligible voters in the United States but only 41 percent of them voted that year. Participation is typically higher in presidential election years.

Paul Ryan’s Ex Gf Served Prison Time for Wire Fraud

By: TMZ Staff

Now we know why Paul Ryan’s ex-girlfriend was so tight-lipped yesterday when we asked her about the VP hopeful … turns out she was indicted by the Feds back in 1999 and spent months in prison for committing wire fraud … TMZ has learned.

Deneeta D. Pope — who made headlines recently as Ryan’s African-American GF in college — was indicted by a Grand Jury in November 1999 for allegedly swindling her former employer — Ernst & Young — out of $77,000.

Pope pled guilty in 2001 to stealing a lesser amount, but admitted she inflated expense reports, fabricated receipts and turned in phony invoices. She then used a wire transfer to move the money from a bank in Delaware to a different account in Chicago.

Pope created the scam by claiming she attended an educational course for work. Turns out … the course didn’t even exist.

Pope served 5 months in Federal Prison.

FYI — Ryan dated Pope approximately 10 years before she was indicted. They met at Miami University of Ohio in the early 90′s.

Buying Twitter Followers, Is it Actually Possible?

By AUSTIN CONSIDINE of the New York Times

AS a comedian, Dan Nainan was blessed with fans, millions of YouTube views and, once, an audience with President Obama. But one thing was missing.

“The number of Twitter followers I had in relation to how many people in the world know about me was woefully inadequate,” he said. So in June he bought a small city’s worth for $424.15, raising his Twitter follower count from about 700 to more than 220,000.

“There’s a tremendous cachet associated with having a large number,” said Mr. Nainan, 31, adding later, “When people see that you have that many followers, they’re like: ‘Oh, my goodness, this guy is popular. I might want to book him.’ ”

It may be the worst-kept secret in the Twittersphere. That friend who brags about having 1,000, even 100,000 Twitter followers may not have earned them through hard work and social networking; he may have simply bought them on the black market.

And it’s not just ego-driven blogger types. Celebrities, politicians, start-ups, aspiring rock stars, reality show hopefuls — anyone who might benefit from having a larger social media footprint — are known to have bought large blocks of Twitter followers.

The practice is surprisingly easy. A Google search for “buy Twitter followers” turns up dozens of Web sites like USocial.net, InterTwitter.com, and FanMeNow.com that sell Twitter followers by the thousands (and often Facebook likes and YouTube views). At BuyTwitterFollow.com, for example, users simply enter their Twitter handle and credit card number and, with a few clicks, see the ranks of their followers swell in three to four days.

Will Mitchell, the founder of Clear Presence Media, a marketing company outside Tampa, Fla., said that he has bought more than a million followers for his clients, which include musicians, start-ups and a well-known actress he declined to identify.

“And it’s so cheap, too,” he said. In one instance, Mr. Mitchell said, he bought 250,000 for $2,500, or a penny each.

One site, Fiverr, an online classified for cheap marketing services, has several ads offering 1,000 Twitter followers for $5.

Heddi Cundle, founder of MyTab.co, a San Francisco company that helps people raise money for trips, spent $5 on Fiverr to buy 200 followers last October, when her site started. By the next month, “we had about 1,100 to 1,200 people on both Twitter and Facebook, which was amazing,” she said. “We needed that to get ourselves going.”

Fake Twitter followers briefly made the news in July, when Mitt Romney’s Twitter following jumped by more than 100,000 in one weekend — a much faster rate than usual. A flurry of news reports purported to expose the practice of buying followers. “Romney Twitter account gets upsurge in fake followers, but from where?” read a headline on the NBC News Technolog blog.” (The Romney campaign has denied it bought followers.) Similar claims were lobbed at Newt Gingrich last year; his campaign also denied that he paid for any of his 1.3 million-strong Twitter following.

Having fake followers, it is important to note, does not necessarily mean that they were purchased. Unlike Facebook friends, Twitter does not require users to approve followers. In other words, anyone can follow you on Twitter, whether it’s your mother or a spammer.

Twitter followers are sold in two ways: “Targeted” followers, as they are known in the industry, are harvested using software that seeks out Twitter users with similar interests and follows them, betting that many will return the favor. “Generated” followers are from Twitter accounts that are either inactive or created by spamming computers — often referred to as “bots.”

Buyers and sellers see nothing wrong with it. “Buying followers generated by bots is against Twitter’s terms and frowned upon by the public,” Mr. Mitchell said. “However, it is perfectly legal.”

The practice has become so widespread that StatusPeople, a social media management company in London, released a Web tool last month called the Fake Follower Check that it says can ascertain how many fake followers you and your friends have.

The tool examines Twitter relationships, said Rob Waller, a founder of StatusPeople. “Fake accounts tend to follow a lot of people but have few followers,” he said. “We then combine that with a few other metrics to confirm the account is fake.”

If accurate, the number of fake followers out there is surprising. According to the StatusPeople tool, 71 percent of Lady Gaga’s nearly 29 million followers are “fake” or “inactive.” So are 70 percent of President Obama’s nearly 19 million followers.

But Twitter is starting to clamp down. In April, it filed suit in federal court in San Francisco against five spammers, including those who create fake Twitter followers. (The case is pending.) That didn’t discourage Mr. Nainan, the comedian. He recently asked about “the theoretical maximum” Twitter followers he can purchase.

“They said, ‘You could probably get over a million, a million and a half,’ ” he said. “And I’m like, ‘Why not? I can afford it.’ ”

A version of this article appeared in print on August 23, 2012, on page E1 of the New York edition with the headline: Buying Their Way To Twitter Fame.
